This particular A-10 is the sole prototype of the YA-10B, a two-seater model which never made it to production.

A curious temporary road-side sign in Devonport a few months ago:

Despite the low-end design of the sign, I’m betting it was backed by a substantial Internet marketing budget spent on natural search rankings and Google AdWords.

I’m a Swiss tourist

Alex and Adelheid initially greeted me warmly as fellow Swiss tourists, probably due to my red+white t-shirt, short blonde hair, fleece, cargo pants and Austrian-designed glasses.

They made quickly for the sunset after hearing my accent.

“Alex? Adelheid? Don’t treat me like this ’cause I’m Kiwi!”

Around the Auckland CBD

Took some time off to take photos around the Auckland CBD yesterday:

And some slightly older photos from January:

Ah, summer. Seems like it’s been so long.

Hot lizard lady

I watched the original V mini-series DVD yesterday. It was surprisingly good, leaving aside the predictably dated special effects. I missed many of the obvious Nazi references when it was originally played on NZ TV, including the swastika-like military emblem used by ‘the Visitors’. But then I was probably only 8.

Someone has uploaded the whole mini-series to YouTube:

GIS is dead! or “I want attention for my new blog”

May 29th, 2008. Posted in Around the blogs | No Comments »

Silliest thing I’ve read in quite some time:

The result is that the term GIS has become irrelevant. It is effectively dead — killed by lack of use and applicability by today’s map and data creators and users

On the contrary - use of the term GIS is on a dramatic rise amongst professional map creators. They may not know what GIS actually is, and they may not own GIS software, but they get the general drift of ‘professional mapping’. Therefore they understand that GIS is a desirable thing for them to follow in the future.

Wires, Windows and GMaps

May 23rd, 2008. Posted in Auckland, Photos | No Comments »

I’m not sure if the wire on this church window sill is aimed at birds or humans:

But I wouldn’t want to grab it with my hands.

The location is St Patrick’s Cathedral Auckland (map). I helped Google out by moving the pushpin to a better location. The old one was near a road intersection.

Now that GMaps has edited entries and a photo layer, it’s becomng a more useful starting point than ‘normal’ Google or Wikipedia for certain searches. Google’s obvious goal for GMaps is to become the user-preferred first stop for searches on anything with a vaguely geographical element, ie replace encyclopedias + yellow pages + white pages + local pamphlets + local business directories + tourism guides etc. That’s a lot of potential local business advertising revenue.

I’m looking forward to Koordinates layers showing up in GMaps search results.
